Excess weight is not good for the body. Due to this various problems occur. Many people nowadays have surgery to lose weight. But the risk is not less due to not fully understanding the issue or not being aware after the surgery. For example: Shafiuddin Mahmud, a real estate businessman from Bangladesh, went to Calcutta to undergo weight loss surgery. He died at a nursing home in Kolkata after losing 20 kg (Source: Prothom Alo, 11 April). Think of pop star Adnan Sami again. This hugely popular musician has undergone surgery and lost about 130 kg. However, if you have to lose weight through surgery, then you need to know what to do before and after. Weight loss will be followed by fatigue and constant tiredness, weight loss, weight loss, weight loss, and weight loss.
To find out if your body weight is lower or higher than normal, you need to know the Body Mass Index (BMI). You can calculate the number of kilograms you weigh by dividing that number by the unit of height in square meters. If the BMI is below 16.5, the weight is considered to be less than normal. It is normal if it is between 18.5 to 23.5. If the BMI is more than 23.5, but less than 26.5, then the weight is higher than normal. If it is more than that, it is called obesity. Obesity is also divided into different categories depending on the calculation of BMI. Remember, surgery is not necessary if you are overweight.
Why weight gain?
Weight gain is mainly due to overeating and reduced physical activity. However, in some cases, weight gain may be due to unknown reasons and the effects of certain drugs. It is important to have a thorough understanding of these issues before performing surgery.
Complications of Obesity The
average life expectancy of obese people is 15 years shorter than that of their peers. May cause diabetes and high blood pressure. It is also difficult to breathe during sleep. The amount of fat in the blood increases and various problems occur. They also have a higher risk of cancer. Fat can also accumulate in the liver and cause problems from there.
Keep the weight under control
Weight control should include dietary changes and physical activity. Weight loss will be followed by fatigue and constant tiredness. So far no medication has been able to reduce weight properly. However, weight loss can be achieved through surgery. Its name is bariatric surgery. But nowadays it is called metabolic surgery. The name is derived from the fact that the surgery is performed to solve certain physical problems.
This applies to people
with a BMI above 33.5, if they have problems other than obesity, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood fats, arthritis in both knees, or difficulty breathing. Need surgery. And if someone's BMI is more than 36.5, then it is necessary even if he has no problem other than obesity. The surgery is usually performed between the ages of 18 and 65. However, it can be done many times, even if it is less or more than the age.
Why this surgery is done?
Within three years of the surgery, 6 percent of the patients lose 70 percent of their previous weight. If the patient has diabetes, high blood pressure or shortness of breath during sleep, they will also come under control during this period. If there is a problem in conceiving due to excess weight, that problem goes away.
What is done in surgery?
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgically removes some part of the stomach. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery involves covering the stomach with a portion of the intestine that is quite far from the stomach.
Could there be any complications?
Any surgery can have some problems. Bariatric surgery is no exception. Where sutures are given in the stomach or intestines, any part of the sutures may open. In this case, special care has to be taken after the surgery. The patient has to be kept in the high dependency unit of the hospital for this special care at this time. These patients may suffer from depression due to their physical condition, so the help of a psychiatrist should be sought. There will be surgeons, anesthesiologists, endocrine specialists and dietitians.
Again laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery can sometimes lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
After the operation,
the patient will not be able to eat more oily and spicy heavy food even if he wants to. However, if you have a tendency to eat more ice cream or soft drinks, you should refrain from eating these. Otherwise, weight loss will not be achieved even after surgery. Patients can usually take oral food 24 hours after surgery. Then he must eat less than before. However, food should be eaten every three to four hours. At night, however, it is possible to go without food for 8 to 10 hours continuously.
After surgery, an average of 1,400 calories per day should be taken, of which 60 per cent should be taken from sugars, 20 per cent from non-vegetarian foods and the remaining 20 per cent from fatty foods. One gram of sugar provides four calories, one gram of meat provides four calories and one gram of fatty foods provides nine calories. The food list has to be made according to this calculation. Drink enough water and eat foods rich in vitamins and minerals. Some exercises can be done after the surgery as per the advice of the doctor and physiotherapist. Because, the type of exercise will be different for each patient according to the physical condition. If there are no other complications after the surgery, the patient is advised to swim and ride a bicycle.
Surgery does not apply to
those who are heartbroken or have too much difficulty breathing in their sleep and for those who cannot be operated on completely due to any physical problem.
Liposuction is not the same as bariatric surgery. Liposuction is the removal of fat from a specific part of the body. This is a cosmetic surgery, it is not a part of bariatric surgery.
